Zero-Landfill Sculpture
This piece, created while on TerraCycle’s Industrial Design team and in collaboration with Integral Sculpture Works, was commissioned by Subaru to celebrate one million pounds of waste diverted from the Subaru Park stadium, home of the Philadelphia Union soccer team. The stadium is the first in Major League Soccer to be zero landfill and is setting a new standard for waste creation and diversion for stadiums worldwide. This sculpture is a 10’ diameter soccer ball structure on a 4’ base, composed entirely of recycled and upcycled materials. Each panel of the soccer ball consists of recycled plastic and upcycled bottles, cans, and other waste collected from a single game at the stadium. In all, there are over 4000 pieces of upcycled waste on the sculpture. The piece stands as a monument to the significant efforts of the on-the-ground team collecting the waste on a daily basis, and also stands as a reminder of the impact of single use packaging and ‘disposable’ products.
